There are some obvious restrictions to a vehicle of this size, but the Spark makes good use of its features—at least at launch. Even though they don’t have lids, you may use the glovebox to conceal anything. For your smaller items, there are a couple of decent-sized centre sections and many large pockets on the doors.
When compared to rivals like the Kia Rio and the Mitsubishi Mirage, the Spark’s trunk space is much smaller. You might want to consider bringing fewer items than you would in other cars, even though all trim levels include a hard tonneau cover to keep your possessions hidden and a 60/40 split rear seat that can be folded flat to fit larger items.

For a compact budget car, the Spark has respectable standard equipment. Standard on all trims except the base LS is air conditioning (the optional CVT adds refrigeration to that trim), automatic headlights, variable intermittent wipers, a tilt steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Connected Access, which gives you ten years of service reminders and vehicle diagnostics. The OnStar service and the built-in Wi-Fi hotspot are also part of the package, but you’ll need to subscribe to them when the trial ends.
Since the basic trim covers all wheels, and each 15-inch wheel is made of steel and aluminium, the price of winter tyres will be lowered. Upgrading to the 2LT (which is CVT-only) adds a plethora of goodies, such as heated seats, power sunroof, leatherette upholstery, rear park assist, push-button start, emergency braking, and lane departure alert.
That may not seem like much, but hear me out: this little hatchback is fantastic when paired with the five-speed manual, but it becomes a monstrous groaning monster when coupled with a continuously variable transmission.
Even though it’s not a powerhouse (try starting in second gear and you’ll see what I mean), it can get you going quickly from a standstill to a comfortable cruising pace. There is an integrated hill-start assist on the stick shift. With 6.5 L/100 km, the Mitsubishi Mirage has the best fuel economy of any competitor, whereas the combined ratings of the Hyundai Accent (now discontinued) and the Kia Rio (now in production) are 7.0 and 6.9 L/100 km, respectively. Throughout my week with it, which was mostly on my local rural roads, I consistently achieved 6.8 L/100 km. I won’t deny that.

Standard on all new cars is a rearview camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and driver and passenger knee airbags, which are available on all trim levels. For a first-time driver, the 2LT, the highest trim level, is the way to choose because of all the safety features it offers, like lane departure warning, rear parking sensors, and emergency front braking.
I have concerns regarding the reliability of all General Motors vehicles, including the Spark. All of the lights, including the reverse lights, flash and stay on for a long time when you press the unlock button on the key fob. Unlocking a General Motors in a parking lot when it’s nosed between other cars makes me nervous since I can’t see who’s behind the wheel. Flashing taillights are more than enough to indicate that it is unlocked, thus GM should do rid of the backup lights.

In an effort to undercut the $10,000 mark, Nissan and Chevrolet battled it out a few years ago with the Micra and Spark, two of their most affordable vehicles in Canada. The Spark is now the most expensive at $9,998; however, similar to the now-defunct Micra, the majority of buyers opt for higher trim levels in order to get air conditioning.
Plus, there aren’t many rivals anymore. Starting with the New 2026 model year, Toyota will no longer produce the Yaris Hatchback ($17,290–$19,950) and Accent ($14,949–$21,649).
